The Tasty Corner

Christoph and I have seldom eaten the same dish as often in four weeks as gyros in Athens. You can actually find it on every corner here and it is super delicious!

While in Hamburg you now have to pay just under 10 euros for a pita gyros, here the gyros costs between 2 and 4 euros. It is filled with pork gyros, onions, tomatoes, fries and tzatziki. Nevertheless, the seasoning mix is different at each stand, which always makes it exciting to go out to eat gyros. In Germany, the alternative filling “souvlaki” is somewhat less well known: whole, small pieces of meat (chicken or beef) that are grilled on a skewer and then (of course without the skewer) rolled into a pita bread with salad and sauce.

With gyros for sale all over town, it was the perfect afternoon snack after a long day of sightseeing or a good dinner after a long day at work. We found one of our favorite gyros at a great restaurant in our neighborhood called “The Tasty Corner”. When we first walked past this restaurant I wasn’t sure if this was the place for a relaxed dinner in Athens. But when I looked through the window, I saw two Greek grandpas who were enthusiastically biting into their huge gyros pitas and seemed very happy. After that we immediately turned around and went to the “Tasty Corner” for dinner. There we were warmly welcomed and were the only tourists. The later it got that evening, the more Greek families arrived to eat dinner, which showed us once again how popular the place must be in the area.
